NOTARY PUBLIC
IRELAND · APOSTILLE · AUTHENTICATION

A notary public is a legal officer appointed by the Supreme Court of Ireland to authenticate documents for use in foreign countries. A notary's signature and seal gives a document official legal standing internationally. In Ireland, the notarial qualification is a separate admission obtained by examination — all notaries are also solicitors, but not all solicitors are notaries.

A solicitor provides legal advice and represents clients. A notary public performs a different, specific function: authenticating documents for international use. The notarial qualification is obtained separately, by examination, and the appointment is made by the Supreme Court. All notaries are solicitors — but the notarial role is distinct and the qualification is additional.

A commissioner for oaths can witness affidavits and statutory declarations for use within Ireland. If your document is going to be used in another country, you almost certainly need a notary public. If you are unsure, contact us — we will advise you without charge.

An Apostille is an additional authentication stamp, issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin, which is required by countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention. It confirms that the notary's appointment is genuine. Many foreign authorities require both notarisation and an Apostille before they will accept an Irish document. William will advise you at the outset whether an Apostille is required for your document and country.

You will need to bring the original document to be notarised and valid photo ID (passport preferred), along with any supporting documents specific to your transaction. William will advise you in advance of your appointment exactly what to bring — there will be no surprises on the day.

Most appointments take between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on the complexity and volume of documents. Powers of attorney and corporate documents may take longer if preparation is required in advance. William will advise on timing when you make your appointment.

Yes. William is available for mobile appointments across Wicklow, Wexford, Dublin and Kildare, subject to availability. An additional fee applies for mobile appointments. Please contact us in advance to discuss availability and confirm the fee.

Fees are agreed in advance of every appointment. The fee depends on the nature and complexity of the document, the number of documents, and whether a mobile appointment is required. Contact us for a quote — we respond promptly and there is no obligation to proceed.

William notarises English-language documents. If your document is in another language, a certified translation may be required before notarisation can proceed. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
